How to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert

Upgrading your weapons and armor is incredibly important in Crimson Desert. Whether you’re about to fight a dangerous beast or simply want to go for a walk in the wilds – being unprepared could lead to your death. Don’t worry though, down below I’ll show you how to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert.

How to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert

To upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert, you need to visit a Smithy. These will typically appear in towns, like the one in Hernand. Just keep an eye out for the anvil icon on the map. Once there, it’s time to talk to the blacksmith.

Next select ‘Refinement’. This is the term Crimson Desert uses for upgrading weapons and armor, so keep that in mind!

You’ll now be sent to a list of all the weapons and armor you have both equipped and in your inventory. Weapons are listed first, so you’ll need to scroll down for armor. This menu will let you see both the materials required for upgrading something and boosts it will receive from doing so.

It’s important to note that some items, like the Visione, can not be upgraded. Other items can only be upgraded a certain number of times, with this being recorded by the ‘Refinement’ tally in their stat box.

After selecting the item you wish to upgrade, you’ll be sent to a dedicated material screen. Here, depending on the materials required, you may be able to substitute a specific material for something else. Though you can’t substitute anything considered an ‘Essential Material’, such as Timber for wooden items.

The exact materials you’ll need will also differ depending on what you’re upgrading. Metal weapons will typically need ores like Copper or Iron, while fabric based armor will require Thin Hide.

No matter what you’re upgrading, when you’re happy with the materials you’re using select ‘Refine’. After a short cutscene (which you can skip), you’ll have an upgraded weapon or armor! It’s a good idea to regularly upgrade your weapons and armor to ensure you’re always prepared for whatever threat crosses your path.
