How do I swim may be one of your first questions when you begin playing Pokémon Pokopia. After all, there’s an awful lot of water and Ditto doesn’t know how to swim at all.
While you could try jumping through the water or just seeing how long Ditto will last underwater (spoiler, it’s long not), neither are reliable ways for navigating the waters of Pokopia.
Thankfully, swimming is available! So let’s take a look at how to swim in Pokopia by unlocking Surf.

How to swim in Pokopia
To swim in Pokopia you need to unlock the Surf move by completing the ‘Swimming time!’ request for Piplup in Bleak Beach. First, however, you need to start the ‘Brighten things up’ Important Request. Piplup’s request should be unlocked during this, so keep an eye on them!
When it comes to Piplup’s request itself, it, as the name suggests, is all about Piplup wanting to go for a swim with Ditto. Yet, since Ditto is more of a sinker rather than a swimmer, that’s a little difficult to do. Thankfully, Professor Tangrowth has an idea – get advice from a Lapras.
To meet Lapras, you need to build the Tropical seaside habitat which requires:
- 1 Large Palm Tree
- 4 Hedge (Any)
- 2 Ocean Water
For the location of this habitat, I recommend the palm tree just west on the beach from where Smearguru paints. This has enough room for your hedges and is close enough to the ocean. While you could grow the hedges, it’s a lot easier to use Rototiller to pull up some of the hedges from around Bleak Beach.
After building the habitat, it’s time to wait for Lapras to arrive. For me, it took somewhere between three to five minutes for Lapras to appear. Despite this short time frame, I highly recommend placing a Security Camera pointing at the habitat so you’re notified of Lapras’ appearance immediately upon its arrival.
When Lapras appears, head back and talk to it to learn Surf! Now pressing the B button anytime Ditto is in water will transform it into Lapras, allowing it to swim without fear of sinking and, as an added bonus, Ditto-Lapras is super cute. Pressing the B button while in water will undo the transformation, but, depending on the depth, you may start sinking again.
Now you’re free to either enjoy swimming around Bleak Beach. (Unless you’re like me and built land bridges everywhere. So many land bridges…) Though it’s worth taking the time finishing up Piplup’s request. There’s no additional reward, but you do get to enjoy a lovely swim with Piplup.
