How to get Smooth Rock in Pokémon Pokopia

Smooth Rock in Pokémon Pokopia is a material necessary for creating Onix’s habitat in Withered Wastelands or elsewhere, if you so choose. That said, there’s only one known place you can find this item at the time of writing, so if you lose it, you may be worried about how you’re ever going to complete Onix’s abode. Fret not!

In this guide, we’ve explained exactly how to get Smooth Rock, including how to get more of the item if you happen to have lost it.

How to get Smooth Rock in Pokémon Pokopia

Smooth Rock is found inside of a red Poké Ball in Withered Wastelands during the Yawn up a Storm! Important Request in Pokopia, though you may find it before or after starting this Request depending on how much exploring you’re doing. There is also one other way of getting it that we’ll explain shortly.

Here are both methods for obtaining Smooth Rock in Pokopia:

1. Find Smooth Rock in the Withered Wastelands cave

In the small cave where you find Onix (which is by the Area Gate that leads to Bleak Beach), keep exploring the cave further to quickly find this red Poké Ball containing the Smooth Rock.

Now, if you’ve already picked up the above red Poké Ball and happen to have misplaced your Smooth Rock before being able to establish Onix’s ‘Smooth Tall Grass’ habitat, there does not appear to be any other place you will naturally find it again in Pokopia.

That doesn’t mean you’re out of luck however, because fortunately the 3D Printer exists.

2. Print Smooth Rock using the 3D Printer

After rebuilding at least one Pokémon Center in Pokopia, you’ll be able to go inside and access the 3D Printer on the left-hand side of the room.

Here, you can print out items you have taken reference photos of in exchange for Pokémetal and Rare Pokémetal.

To take a reference photo of an item, open your camera using the minus button (-) and then press ‘Y’ to enter reference mode. Any photos you then take are added to your folder of reference photos (which can hold a maximum of 20 photos at a time).

This means you’ll ultimately need two things before you can print out a Smooth Rock using the 3D Printer:

  • A reference photo of a Smooth Rock. You’ll need to visit a friend’s island to take this if you don’t have a Smooth Rock for yourself, or visit the Developer Island.
  • 2x Rare Pokémetal per Smooth Rock you wish to print (and it has to be rare, it cannot be normal Pokémetal).

Now, both of these things – Rare Pokémetal especially – can be hard to come by, but as you approach Pokopia’s late-game, it’s more than likely that you’ll have found just enough Rare Pokémetal Ingots or Rare Pokémetal Fragments (which can then be smelted into Ingots) to be able to print one Smooth Rock.

Ultimately, one of these is all you need for Onix’s ‘Smooth Tall Grass’ habitat, but you may want more for decorative purposes! That’s where the 3D Printer comes in handy, if you can afford the costs of using it.
