Reliable tipster NateTheHate has claimed that the long-rumoured Final Fantasy IX Remake is still on ice, which is something the leaker previously stated last summer.
Speaking on the latest episode of the NateTheHate podcast, the insider noted that ‘on ice’ does not necessarily mean we won’t see the game at some point in the future, but for now at least, Square Enix isn’t doing anything with the project.
The last update I had on it is that the game is still on ice. Now, ‘on ice’ with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I’ve heard there’s been no new movement with it. Hopefully, one day, Square Enix returns to it and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light.
Final Fantasy IX Remake has been reportedly in the works for a few years now, and NatetheHate had originally stated that the project wouldn’t be released until 2025 – sadly, this didn’t obviously happen. Both Gematsu and Jeff Grubb corroborated reports that a remake of the classic PSOne RPG was in the pipeline, although given this latest update from Nate, we’ll just have to play the waiting game and see if something materialises.
Final Fantasy IX was originally released for the PSOne back in 2000 and was developed in parallel with Final Fantasy VIII. The game is noted for dropping the more futuristic tone of its predecessors in favour of a more medieval aesthetic that recalls the earlier Final Fantasy games.
