Industry analysts have weighed in on the ongoing chatter about the price of PS6 and Xbox Project Helix, believing it’s entirely possible gamers will be dropping a whopping $999.99 on Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation systems.
Last week it was confirmed that Sony was increasing the price of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal, and in the case of the PS5 Pro, you’ll be having to drop $900 on the high-end system one the price hike kicks in this week.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Kantan Games CEO, Dr. Serkan Toto, has stated that he believes there may be one configuration of the PS6 that may see consumers forking out $1,000 for the luxury of a next-generation system.
“It looks like Sony baked in potential future fluctuations and decided to go for one substantial increase in early 2026 instead of raising prices more frequently and over a longer period of time,” said Toto, in regards to the recent price increase for PlayStation hardware. “This strategy also gives them some leeway to lower prices and offer ‘deals’ if things surprisingly get better.”
“I think $999 at least for one variant of the PS6 is not impossible,” he added. This sentiment as also echoed by Joost van Dreunen, a video games professor at NYU, who said “we’re quickly moving towards a world in which a $1,000 console will be the norm, and console gaming will become a luxury expenditure.”
They really don’t want to raise prices on their hardware, because that part is usually a heavily subsidized part of the equation and the sale of games is the gravity point of their revenue model. I predict that the next generation of console hardware will start at a 50% higher price point than the current one did.
Finally, Circana’s Mat Piscatella said “both the timing and pricing of something like a PS6 must be considered to be in flux,” adding “there is just far too much volatility and uncertainty.”
As previously reported, hardware leaker Kepler_L2 feels that there’s a chance that Sony’s next home console could retail for around $699, although this factors in a 1TD SSD and no disc drive.
