CD Projekt RED has announced that it will release a free Cyberpunk 2077 update for the PS5 version of the game that will implement support for Sony’s upgraded PSSR (aka PSSR 2.0). The news follows Sony’s earlier announcement today that a new PS5 system update is beginning a phase rollout today to add PSSR 2.0.
For transparency: this update will not be introducing any new in-game content. It will release only for the PS5 version of the game and is solely focused on allowing it to take advantage of the expanded hardware capabilities offered by the PS5 Pro system.
Last week, CDPR confirmed that there are no current plans to introduce any new expansion for DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, which isn’t a surprise at this point as the studio is shifting focus over to Cyberpunk 2, which is in pre-production as of May 2025. Back in November last year, the studio confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 35 million units globally since its launch in December 2020.
Cyberpunk 2077 was originally released for the PS4, PC, and Xbox One in December 2020, just a month after the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, the initial console versions were dragged down by a variety of bugs and performance issues, which took months to fix via numerous post-launch patches. It later emerged that CDPR spent a staggering $125 million fixing Cyberpunk 2077 alongside developing its sole expansion, Phantom Liberty.
Fortunately, things improved greatly with the release of the native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions in 2022, which benefited from a wealth of quality-of-life improvements.
