Unbound, the new studio from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, is working on a triple-A original IP for consoles and PC.
That’s according to a website for Unbound Games, which has been live for about a year now but has only just come to attention, which mentions the studio has been in business since May 2023 and lists Mikami as its representative director. Unbound is described on the site as a “fully independent company, developing high-end consumer games, creating original AAA titles,” and is looking to expand is current workforce of 50 to around 150.
Job listings for the studio reveal the company is working on a “high-end” original IP powers by Unreal Engine 5 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. According to Unbound’s profile page, its team is comprised of individuals who have worked on a number of major franchise, including Hi-Fi Rush, Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Silent Hill.
Masato Kimura, the producer of Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush, is among those working at Unbound, and has previously worked with Mikami on numerous occasions on project such as Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and PN.03.
Mikami revealed during an interview on a talk show back in April 2024 that he had wanted to leave Tango Gameworks for a while before finally deciding to do so in 2023, but stuck around due to responsibilities related to then-ongoing projects. Tango Gameworks itself was shuttered by Microsoft in 2024, but the studio was later saved by Krafton as part of a ‘strategic integration.’
A veteran of the games industry, Mikami got his started at Capcom working on games like Goof Troop before assuming the director’s chair for 1996’s Resident Evil, and went on to work on a number of major titles such as Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, and Resident Evil 4 before developing God Hand (Clover Studios), Vanquish (Platinum Games) and The Evil Within (Tango Gameworks).
